Shipwrecked, yet not sunk
Acts 27:1 – Acts 28:10

1. The Sail – Keeping the focus (Acts 27:9-11)
Busan9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, 10 “Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” 11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship. – Acts 27:9-11 (NIV)
As much as we can plan for our life, many times we find ourselves in situations beyond our control. Paul knew it was a terrible idea to take the route according to the pilot and owner of the ship. God is more interested in how we respond to a certain situation rather than changing the situation for our convenience. Many Christians might have a frustrating prayer life when God doesn’t answer the way we wanted it. Maybe it is good to examine our relationship with God whether we have just stopped at a “Santa, give me” mentality. I once heard that the craziest plan from God in a godly person (eg. Moses with his staff in front of the Red Sea or Joshua marching around Jericho) is better than the best idea in the hand of an ungodly person. In Paul’s this case, even though he knew it was a “wrong” route to take,

God’s presence was with Paul and God even sent an angel to minister to him.

  • 1.      What are some of the seemingly “bad” experiences you had which God has turned things around for good?
  • 2.      If you are currently going through a storm or shipwreck, what would be the top three(3) items you would like to bring with you. Why?
  • 3.      As we approach Christmas, let’s ponder if our faith and relationship has caused people in our surrounding to get closer to Christ, the very reason of Christmas.
